You may be familiar with some of the more popular features of Office 365, but did you know about the feature called Stream? Microsoft Stream is a scalable, enterprise class video hosting and sharing solution – integrated with Office 365 security and applications. You can easily drag and drop videos to share, in channels, and then utilize these videos in-line with SharePoint Online, Yammer, or Delve. Please note that Stream is included in any of the Microsoft Office “Enterprise” plans (E1 through E5), not Business Essentials or Business Premium. However, it is available separately on per user pricing plans.

What can you do with Stream?

So, in a nutshell, Microsoft Stream lets you upload, share, and play videos within your enterprise organization. Think of it as a “mini-YouTube”. Further, it’s got all the essential functions you’d expect, such as channels to group your videos into related categories and sharing links. But the most important difference is that with Stream, you can put granular security on who can view the videos. This puts it a step ahead of YouTube or Vimeo, the two most popular public video sharing services. Why would you want to do this? Here’s some possible scenarios:

In summary, this feature is cool, because it addresses a common need for larger companies and does it in a secure fashion. There are some niche solutions that also provide for this – but they aren’t integrated with all your Office 365 applications. Deeply integrated solutions such as these are one of the primary reasons we recommend Office 365.

Lastly, Stream has advanced features – such as automatically generated transcripts and in-video face detection. There’s even a capability to automatically generate a timeline of where those faces appear in the video. Please note these features are only available in the higher levels of the plan.

How do I get get Stream?

Stream is included in the Office 365 E1, E3, and E5 plans. These are the “Enterprise” plans, it is not included in Business Essentials or Business Premium. It is available separately using a per user pricing model (Plan 1 and Plan 2). Current pricing details for this option are here.
