Internet Connection Troubleshooting
We commonly find that small business customers aren’t getting all they are paying for out of their Internet connection. We can work with your ISP (Internet Service Provider) to determine the state of your network, and make sure you are getting all the bandwidth, performance, and reliability that you are paying for.
Common Internet connection problems can include:
- Reliability and uptime issues
- Poor performance
- Inadequate security
These problems can be complicated, because they can span the boundary between your ISP (the modem, their router, etc.) and your own equipment. The ISP will not troubleshoot or debug problems on your firewall, switches, or router. That’s where an experience IT company such as ourselves can make all the difference. We know how to pinpoint the source of network issues – using the process of elimination to confirm which components or links are functioning properly, and what’s not.
Additionally, we’ve worked with all the local ISPs. We know the tips and tricks to get the most from their technology, and how to work with their support efficiently.
And lastly, when your company has grown and the old Internet connection is no longer providing adequate performance, we can advise and implement a faster, more reliable connection. We have had great success in this area with many of our clients. Is it worthwhile upgrading to a fiber internet connection from cable? It depends – what are your needs, and what’s available in your area? We can help determine what is best for your business.
Nowadays, Wi-Fi (or Wireless networking) is a business-critical service. With the popularity of laptops, notebooks, tablets, and even smartphones, all being used for business-critical processes, WiFi is more important than ever.
But it’s also one of the areas where we see the most problems. Why is this? Because it has often been setup incorrectly to begin with. Wireless networking is much more complicated than wired networking (Ethernet) and requires the right equipment, in the right locations. And the Wi-Fi signal (really radio waves) know no boundaries – your neighbors to the left, right, above, and below can all have an impact on your network! There are also a lot of variables on the device side – Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android. We have extensive experience setting up and improving WiFi networks.
Secondly, we often see WiFi deployed in a very insecure fashion for our small business clients. In this day and age, it is not acceptable to have the same Wifi password shared amongst every one of your employees. What do you do when someone leaves? This is just one small example of the problems that can occur with an incorrectly configured Wi-Fi network.
Equipment We Support
We work with all major brands of equipment (routers, switches, Wifi Access Points, firewalls, etc.):
- Palo Alo
- And more…
We also work with all the common consumer level equipment such as LinkSys, D-Link, NetGear, and pretty much every brand you might have in a small business.
Remote Access and Security
Today’s workforce is more mobile than ever – work from the office, work from home, work from the road – and at all hours of the day (and night). At the same time, cyber-security threats are greater than they’ve ever been – and customers and consumers are requiring the proper handling of their confidential and private data.
We can review your remote access technology such as VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) and other mechanisms and ensure they are secure, configured properly, and giving the performance required. It’s also more important than ever to have a secure firewall, one that provides the right services to prevent malicious attackers from getting a foot hold on your local network. Great strides have been made in recent years, but we often don’t see this technology in use for our small business clients. Why is that? Simply because nobody ever explained the benefits and the necessity. This sort of secure technology is not that expensive!
